Zachary at Berklee

My name is Zachary Krodel. I will be attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA starting January 17th, 2012. On this blog, I will share my experiences at Berklee from the day I begin to graduation day.

Trader Joe’s vs Whole Foods

Like most informed and healthy-minded Berklee students, I have been doing the majority of my shopping at either Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. I have become kind of addicted to these two shops. Both of them offer a variety of healthy foods and products: No MSG, no high fructose corn syrup, no preservatives, and no artificial coloring or flavors or scents.

I think you know where this is going. I have shopped twice at both locations, and I have thoroughly explored both stores.

Let the showdown begin!

First, the selection, since they are supermarkets after all:

Trader Joe’s - In terms of health, it is pretty hard to go wrong with Trader Joe’s. Everything on their shelves (except the snacks and frozen foods) is good for you. Even if you don’t know what you’re looking for when you read that nutrition label, it doesn’t matter. You’re good. Unfortunately, this fact is a double edged sword. At least at the shop in Boston, there isn’t much variety. I am sure this varies substantially depending on location, but I am only judging based on the store location here. There are enough products for a college student, but not a family.

Whole Foods - The selection at Whole Foods is ridiculous. They have everything Trader Joe’s has, plus more. There’s even a full deli, salad bar, and a place to buy different meat and fish cuts. They also have a much larger selection of non-food items here, including natural supplements and medications. I also found the produce to be of much higher quality at Whole Foods.

Winner: Whole Foods

Price:

Trader Joe’s - Everything is reasonably priced at Trader Joe’s, considering the fact that organic foods usually cost more than non-organics. The size of the products for what you pay for is also quite good, although not good enough for larger families.

Whole Foods - EXPENSIVE. Even basic items like bread and juice are more at Whole Foods than at Trader Joe’s. Protein bars at Whole Foods: $1.29 each. Trader Joe’s: 99 cents. No contest. I can see why so many college students shop here.

Winner: Trader Joe’s

Staff:

Trader Joe’s - Trader Joe’s has very friendly staff. They smile and talk to you while bagging your groceries, and will always assist you if you need help finding something or just have some questions. The entire mood of the place is very positive and uplifting. You feel like dancing around the store (and some people do, I might add).

Whole Foods - Whole Foods also has really nice service, although the store’s tonality is a little more generic. It just feels like your average supermarket but with healthier foods. It doesn’t have the “style” that Trader Joe’s possesses.

Winner: Trader Joe’s

Logo (yes, this is important!):

Trader Joe’s - Who would want to shop at a place with an ugly logo? Not me! The Trader Joe’s logo has style. You can really tell the personality of the shop just by looking at it. This is very important. People, whether they will admit it or not, are very affected by what they see. Take Nike, for instance. Their stuff is made in China but people will spend hundreds of dollars on Nike shoes just for brand name.

Whole Foods - Whole Foods uses a different design philosophy than Trader Joe’s. While Trader Joe’s went for style, Whole Foods went for simplicity. Both designs have merit, but in this particular case, Whole Foods logo comes across as a bit bland. It just makes me think “supermarket”. Trader Joe’s logo makes me think “culture”. In some other situations, Whole Foods logo would have been fine; Just not in the supermarket business.

Winner: Trader Joe’s

Well there you have it. My thoughts on both companies, bearing in my mind that I know nothing about their management or history. This is just raw opinion. And that raw opinion leads me to declaring the overall winner of this little competition:

I’ll be shopping at Trader Joe’s.

(However, Whole Foods definitely has better produce. Trader Joe’s produce simply doesn’t taste as fresh.)
